Note: This image is based on a photograph of the 1982 oil painting, Kerze, it was then reversed. The symbol of the candle was once considered emblematic of the GDR, this link was not lost on Richter who championed its exploration through photography and light. This work belongs to Richter's photo-realist project, which was a direct response to the illustrative art the artist was forced to undertake whilst living in East Germany. This composition of the burning candle from the 1980s alongside the artist's illuminated skulls of the same period are believed to be a commentary on the passage of time.
